Charles Tyrrell

Charles was born in Trim, Co. Meath, in 1950, he has been living on the Beara peninsula, Co. Cork since 1984. He studied at the National College of Art & Design in Dublin.

His early large-scale canvases were influenced by American abstract expressionism and have since evolved with a more minimalist approach including restraining geometric forms. He represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale in 1982, and has exhibited in major exhibitions in Ireland and abroad, solo exhibitions include Triskel Arts centre in 1992; Austin/Desmond Fine Art, London in 1994; Royal Hibernian Academy’s Gallagher Gallery – Retrospective 2000; Taylor Gallery, Dublin in 2001; Butler Gallery, Kilkenny Castle in 2002; Fenton Gallery Cork in 2005.

Charles taught at the Dun Laoghaire School of Art from 1977 to 1981.
