Show October 2005
RUTH McDONNELL & MIRIAM McCONNON
PAINTINGS 05

The lemonstreet gallery will host an exhibition of new works by Irish artists
Ruth McDonnell and Miriam McConnon.
This is a fine exhibit of new paintings from two artists with individual styles.
The show has an impressive range in both the content and form characterising
each artist’s approach.
Ruth McDonnell is from County Cavan and currently lives and works in Dublin.
She studied at the Medway College of Design in Kent 1969-72, Dun Laoghaire IADT,
The Slade School of Art and DIT where she was awarded a BA in Fine Art in 2002.
In 2001 she received the student Printmaking Award from the RDS, and in 2004
she received the Thomas Dammann Junior Memorial Award, an Arts Council Bursary
and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre residency, awarded by Cavan County Council.
McDonnell’s work is featured in a number of private and public collections
including the Office of Public Works, Mater Hospital, National Irish Bank and
McCann Fitzgerald Solicitors.
In these new paintings McDonnell uses the landscape of the border counties
to explore ideas of real and imaginary boundaries and frontiers.
Miriam Mc Connon is from Dublin and currently based in Cyprus. She studied
Fine Art at NCAD in Dublin and completed a Post-Grad Diploma in Fine Art painting
at the National College of Art in Lemba, Cyprus. Her work is in several private
and public collections including the Office of Public Works, RTE, Wesley College
and Bank of Ireland.
The source of Miriam McConnon’s paintings is an ancient archeological
site, yet only certain symbols and shapes in her finished work hint at this
source. In this painted world that the artist has created, these distinctive
shapes and symbols are the main characters.
The artist invites the viewer to look beyond the simplicity of shape and into
a painted scene acted out by abstract characters and symbols. Often a single
shape appears submerged below a surface of colour, restrained there by carefully
stitched lines of thread. The artist’s use of thread in her paintings
is very subtle and yet very expressive. It introduces a linear element into
a composition, which is strong in shape and colour creating a subtle conflict
between line and colour.
There is a quiet solitude expressed in Miriam’s work through her choice
of calm and discreet colour and the subtlety of form.
The Exhibition will run from the 13th October to 12th November 2005.
