Thomas Hogan

Artist's statement

My paintings are direct responses to my surrounding environment. Exploring the more formal or 'visual' side of the medium and attempting to maintain and accentuate a 'non-verbal', somewhat innocent response are two of my chief objectives. Hopefully this focus of attention, coupled with the manner in which the paintings are made, gives an air of stillness or a muted quality. My choice of subject matter is largely dictated by two factors. The first is an overriding personal interest in day-to-day, domestic locations and objects. The second is the importance of discovering a stimulating observational and often geometric framework on which to base my improvisations and simplifications. Creating interesting and original compositions is my main preoccupation.
