DAVID KIELY

A Year In The Life

The lemonstreet gallery is delighted to host a solo show of new paintings by David Kiely

Born in Cork, David Kiely now lives and works in England. It is a year since his last show in the lemonstreet gallery. In that time he has moved from London to Birmingham. Both cities have played a part in influencing this body of work as well as time spent in India.

In these new works, many of which are landscapes Kiely has managed to play with light turning everyday scenes and places into enchanted studies of the natural environment. As with much of Kiely’s work there is an implied narrative. Many of the places and situations depicted are of a peculiar simplicity. There is an almost sinister atmosphere permeating from the paintings of anonymous buildings and landscapes void of people, which refer to the impact of the terrorist bombings on London in July last year. The attacks were of a nature to cast suspicion upon many communities and institutions which created tension within these multicultural cities.

Kiely also refers to the importance of continuing on with everyday life. Normal life carries on despite the conflict of ideologies. A daily chore of walking the dogs, a family day out or the necessity for commerce tends to contrast against the larger issues of global politics.

Catherine Marshall Senior Curator: Head of Collections at The Irish Museum of Modern Art, will officially open the exhibition at a reception in the lemonstreet gallery on Thursday 11th May from 6pm – 8pm.

The Exhibition will run from 12thMay to 8th June 2006.
